The six strings

Six open strings, one at a time, from the thickest to the thinnest. That is E A D G B E (mi, lá, ré, sol, si, mi) — the sound of a guitar with nobody pressing anything.

They get thinner and higher as you go. Nothing is being fretted yet; this is just the instrument sitting there.
